Mercedes-Benz enters the metaverse with five trademark applications

Mercedes Benz is the latest automobile brand to jump on the metaverse bandwagon. The German vehicle company filed trademark applications for “Mercedes Benz, Mercedes, S-Class, G-Class, and Maybach” for metaverse, NFT, and crypto-related plans.

Filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on December 14, the application indicates that Mercedes wants to create NFTs and NFT-backed media. The company also intends to use digital currency and tokens for Web3 financial services. As for the metaverse, Mercedes–Benz aims to create a virtual store, downloadable virtual goods, and virtual vehicle parts, as well as a marketplace for virtual clothing, footwear, furniture, and home appliances.

Mercedes is already familiar with Web3. In January, the company partnered with five NFT artists to recreate a virtual version of the Mercedes Benz G-Class. The NFTs dropped on Nifty Gateway. Even before the NFT project, Mercedes teamed up with blockchain company Circulor to track carbon emissions in the cobalt supply chain.

In May, the brand’s Formula One racing team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas, announced an NFT collection on the now-defunct FTX NFT marketplace.

Several renowned vehicle brands and manufacturers have joined the Web3 space this year, including Lamborghini with three NFT collections, Fiat’s virtual showroom, and Renault, which announced its industrial metaverse. Luxury automobile company Porsche will release an NFT collection in January 2023.
