Aleph.im and Ubisoft bring playable NFTs to AAA games

  • Players can acquire dynamic NFTs called Digits and use them in Ubisoft’s AAA game
  • Tezos blockchain will track all NFT ownership
  • Aleph.im’s technology enables creation of dynamic NFTs with metadata that evolves with ownership transfer

Aleph.im, a cross-blockchain decentralized storage and computing network, announced a technological partnership with Ubisoft to offer storage for dynamic NFTs on Ubisoft Quartz, Ubisoft’s new blockchain-powered platform. On Quartz, players can acquire dynamic NFTs called Digits and use them in Ubisoft’s AAA game, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

A milestone in video games

Players will be able to claim playable NFTs that represent equipment, weapons, and other in-game assets for the first time in a mainstream video game. They can also sell Digits on Rarible and Objkt, where other eligible players can purchase them.

Aleph.im will store the NFT metadata in its fully decentralized storage system of over 70 nodes. The Tezos (XTZ/USD) blockchain will track all NFT ownership. Aleph.im will store and generate the metadata of these NFTs securely via its microVMs. This includes the description of the item, current and previous owners’ names, and a video of the object at play.

This will also make it possible for anyone to check metadata history trustfully, which will be incredibly useful for NFT platforms Rarible and Objkt.

Jonathan Schemoul, aleph.im Founder and CEO, said:

The incorporation of NFTs into a mainstream game is a revolutionary moment for NFTs. Dynamic NFTs have never been done before and this marks the first time NFTs will evolve over time as various players use them in-game. Aleph.im is proud to be at the forefront of this new era where blockchain technology and decentralized solutions for NFTs play a pivotal role in traditional gaming.

Eliminating dependence on centralized entities

By doing away with dependence, NFT-backed digital assets become more private, secure, and efficient. They are also less vulnerable to cyberattacks. Aleph.im’s evolutionary technology has enabled the creation of dynamic NFTs with metadata that evolves as they pass from player to player.

This is a novel development as traditionally, NFTs tend to be static and don’t change features after being transferred. For example, aleph.im’s technology will let players see the previous owner of any items retrieved, including names and accomplishments.

Didier Genevois, Blockchain Technical Director at Ubisoft, added:

With Ubisoft Quartz, we’re taking the first step to leverage blockchain’s decentralized approach to open new opportunities for our players by making them true stakeholders of our games. To fulfill the technology’s promise, we needed players to actually own their Digit and be able to leave their mark in their favorite game. Aleph.im’s role was key in building this experiment by allowing us to decentralize the storage of the Digits’ video asset and metadata.
